What does attention and concentration mean?

Attention is the brain’s ability to focus on something for a length of time.

How does attention develop?

Attention is a skill that develops with practice.

Giving something attention also needs motivation and understanding. Tiredness, hunger, being anxious or over-excited affects attention.

How to support my child’s attention and concentration?

  • Structure and predictability are really important to develop attention. Children often concentrate better in school because of the strong structure.
  • Your child should be active most of the day, movement and attention are connected in the brain.
  • Reduce screen time – watching or playing on phones or tablets do not help children to develop attention skills.
  • Healthy eating – sugary and processed foods reduce attention and increase activity in children.
  • Practice building up attention together by doing activities your child is interested in.

What should I expect from our community paediatric appointment?

You will be asked information about your child’s early development including hearing, vision and language and motor skills. Information about your household will be important to think about ways to support your child.

Your child may be examined and their development looked at.

ADHD (attention deficit hyperactivity disorder) affects the control of attention. ADHD means people struggle to focus certain tasks. A diagnosis of ADHD is not considered until a child is over 5 years.
