Communication and language – community paediatrics advice

What is communication and language?

Communication is how people interact with each other. Communication can be with words or face and body movements.

Language is how we understand and speak words.

Children develop language and communication in different ways.

How do communication develop?

From birth babies listen to voices, after a while they copy faces and start to make sounds.

Babies and small children need to see and hear different types of communication to develop.

How to support my child’s development?

  • Turn off all phones and distractions and make sure you are looking at your child when you talk to them
  • Communicate with your child as much as you can, talk to them about simple things in the house.
  • If you have concerns about hearing, ask your health visitor to request a hearing test.

What should I expect from our community paediatric appointment?

You will be asked about your child’s language and how they communicate with you. You will be asked about their health and early development.

Your child will be examined, and their development looked at. Reasons why children develop language differently will be considered, for example, autism.

After the appointment your child may need referral to other services.
