Behavioural difficulties – community paediatrics advice

What is behaviour?

Behaviour is the way somebody acts. Young children experience huge changes in their development, during this time their behaviour can be difficult for adults to manage.

Tantrums are part of normal healthy child development and are very common up to 4 years of age.

Why does behaviour become challenging to manage?

Behaviour is a way to tell people something without using words or actions. Young children often do not have the ability to explain how they are feeling. When frustrations build, they can reach an explosion.

What worries do I have about my child’s behaviour?

When behaviour in the home has become challenging it can feel overwhelming to make changes.

Think about what is causing the most difficulty now? Why do you think your child is behaving in a certain way?

What does your child need? Try to see things from their point of view.

What support do you need?

How to support my child to when their behaviour is challenging?

  • Use this poster for meltdowns. Put it on the wall at home or record it in a voice note so you can listen when you need it.
  • Add rhythm and routine to your day- children need to know what will happen to feel safe.
  • Show your child that you are calm and in control, this will help them feel safe and reassured
  • Think about sensory needs or anxiety that might be triggering behaviour.
  • Watch this helpful video from the sensory service Challenging Behaviour

Managing behaviour can be exhausting, be kind to yourself and remember that behaviour changes with age.

What should I expect from our community paediatric appointment?

You will be asked detailed information about your child’s early development and experiences. It will be important to think about their sensory experience, anxiety and other developmental needs that affect their behaviour.

Children with behaviour that is challenging may have other developmental differences that may need further referrals.
