The doctor will send your referral to us after your clinic visit. Sometimes we may try to contact you directly by phone, otherwise you will receive a letter in the post to ask you to contact us to make an appointment.
Your referral will be categorised as either urgent or routine.
This will then be between 1 to 4 week wait but maybe longer depending on the length of the waiting list.
Appointments usually start at the allotted time so it is important you arrive on time. If you arrive more than 20 minutes late you may not be able to be seen and will have to rebook.
You will need to bring appropriate clothing, usually shorts and a t-shirt are suitable. If your child is being assessed for back, neck or shoulder pain your child will be asked to remove their top so please make sure they have a bra or vest top if appropriate.
You will be asked what current medication your child is on or if there is any relevant immediate family medical history. Please be prepared with this information.
For the initial appointment, a parent or guardian must come with your child.
For following appointments, your child can attend on their own (if they are at a responsible age) if you, and the physiotherapist, are happy for them to do this.
Appointments will last up to 45 minutes. You should expect the first appointment to last 40 to 45 minutes. Follow-up appointments are likely to be shorter.
Yes, you will be assigned 1 physiotherapist from first appointment to discharge.
If you cannot get to the appointment, please let us know as soon as possible by telephoning 0114 271 7227. The more notice you give the less likely we are of wasting the valuable appointment time.
If your child is 16 years old or over, then the referral will automatically be re-directed to adult services at either Royal Hallamshire Hospital or Northern General Hospital depending on your address.
If you do not live in Sheffield then your referral will automatically be sent to the physiotherapy department at your local hospital.
The main physiotherapy department is at Sheffield Children’s Hospital on E floor, Stephenson Building. This is to the right hand side of the Emergency Department entrance, and just off Western Bank on Damer Street.
We offer appointments at 2 other locations – Concord Sports Centre and the advanced wellness and research centre (AWRC) in Attercliffe
Please visit our physiotherapy advanced wellness and research centre resource for more information.
For appointments at Sheffield Children’s Hospital there are 2 car parks at either side of the main entrance off Durham Road. The car parks are pay and display, although patients and families with a disability who hold an orange badge can park for free. Spaces are limited so we suggest that wherever possible, families use public transport.
For appointments at AWRC in Attercliffe there is free parking outside the building.
You can get the 51 and 52 buses from the High Street in the city centre. The 50 and 60 buses are available from the Sheffield interchange near the Midland Railway Station.
You can also get the Sheffield supertram at the railway station or at 3 other stops in the city centre. They all stop close to the Sheffield Children’s NHS Trust.
Parents who receive Universal Credit may be able to get a refund of their tram or bus fares with appropriate forms filled out and proof of your appointment at the general office.
Occasionally we do have physiotherapy students on placement who will either observe or take part in the assessment or treatment. Please inform the receptionist when you arrive if your do not want this.
If you have any questions or concerns please telephone on 0114 271 7227.
