Motor skills and movement – community paediatrics advice

What are motor skills?

Motor skills are how children develop movements of their arms, legs and hands.

Fine motor is the small movements of the hands.

Gross motor is the large movements of the body, arms and legs.

How do motor skills develop?

Movement develops through practice.

Babies start moving and building up their muscle strength and balance. Toddlers start to move different muscles together. This helps them learn to do things by themselves, like feed and dress.

How to support my child’s development?

Your child should be active most of the day.

Motor skills develop through repeated practice which helps form connections in the brain.

Some activities need breaking down and practicing in small steps, for example putting on socks.

What should I expect from our community paediatric appointment?

You will be asked information about your child’s motor development from when they were a baby to now. You will be asked about their health and the rest of their development.

Your child may be examined, and their development looked at.

Some children with differences in motor development need blood tests and referral to other services.
