My community paediatrics appointment

We have received your referral to Sheffield Children’s and you are now on the waiting list for a Community Paediatrics appointment. This resource covers:

  • What to expect from your appointment

What support is there while we wait?

The Family Intervention Service are a Council-run ‘Early Help’ service. It provides advice and support for families with a wide range of needs.

Whilst you are waiting for your appointment, have a look at some of the information sessions run by the Family Intervention Service. They can give you some ideas on a range of issues your family finds challenging or would like more information on.

There is also your local Family Hub which have a range of groups and drop-in support services for children aged 0 to 5 years old.

You can talk to your midwife, health visitor, nursery, or school about a referral into the Family Intervention Service. Or you can self-refer by calling 0114 203 7485.

Where will my appointment be?

Clinics take place at Centenary House, the Northern General and Ryegate. For travel information click on the links below:

How long is the appointment?

The first appointment is 60 minutes, follow-up appointments are up to 30 minutes.

What will happen when I arrive?

The receptionist will check your details are correct, including address and telephone number.

While you wait, there should be toys and activities to keep your child occupied. If you need any support in the waiting room, please let somebody know.

A support worker will measure your child’s height and weight.

What will happen at the appointment?

The doctor will take a detailed history about your child from before pregnancy up to the current day. The focus will be on their development and any related behaviours.

If there is information that you want to share without your child present, please tell us.

The doctor may examine your child and look at their development.

At the end of the appointment, the doctor will tell you about your child’s development. Some children will need investigations or referral for further support.

After the appointment

After the appointment, we will post a letter to you, your GP and other professionals.
