We have received your referral at Sheffield Children’s, and you are now on the waiting list for Nephrology.
This resource will go over what to expect at your appointment and also includes some resources which may be helpful to look at.
Please make sure your child is drinking well. For more information on how much your child should be drinking, please visit our page on staying hydrated.
It will be helpful to think about how much your child drinks, wees and poos. We have some useful resources for checking this, including bladder diaries and the Bristol stool chart.
InfoKID has lots of information about the kidneys and urinary system. You can read about different conditions, and tests which might be needed. If your child needs any tests, these will be discussed at your appointment.
Most Nephrology clinics are at the main Sheffield Children’s hospital site. Some are also held at the Northern General Hospital Outpatient Department. Your appointment letter will tell where your appointment is. For more information on our sites, please visit our webpage.
Please bring a sample of your child’s first wee of the day with you to the appointment. You may also wish to bring any recent bladder diaries you have filled in.
Please arrive 15 minutes early to your appointment, so your child has time for their for height and weight measurements. Your first appointment will last around 30 minutes.
At the appointment, your child will have their height, weight and blood pressure measured.
We will test the wee sample you brought with you from home and may ask for another sample during the appointment.
We may also do some blood tests and refer you for other investigations such as ultrasound scan (this will be discussed if it is needed).
