Silicone sheeting for scar management

What is silicone gel sheeting?

Silicone gel sheeting is proven to be effective in the management of scar tissue, with scars noted to become softer, flatter and paler after use.

Its effects are not usually immediate, but with regular use, you can usually see its benefits after several weeks.

There are several different types of gel. Your therapist will be able to advise on the best product for you. It can be used alone to treat small areas of scarring, or in conjunction with pressure garments or splints.

Instructions for use

It is important to grade the amount of time the gel sheet is used to prevent allergic reaction.

To begin with, the sheet should be used for hours per day. This can then be increased by if there are no adverse reactions such as rash or irritation.

It should be worn for a total of hours per day.

If there is a reaction, stop using the product and let the irritation settle down. Reactions can include:

  • redness
  • rash
  • increased itching
  • pain
  • swelling

Contact your occupational therapist for further instruction.

If you lose your gel sheet or have any other concerns, please inform your occupational therapist.

The gel sheet should be washed with a mild soap and tepid water 2 times per day.

Siltape should be removed and replaced with new tape daily.
