I am coming to Ryegate to get my weight and height measured.
Sometimes people need to have their weight and height measured.
There are lots of reasons people need their weight and height measured. One reason is to check that I am growing. There might be other reasons too.
This will give healthcare professionals important information about me.
When we arrive at Ryegate, we will go to reception. My parent or carer will let the receptionist know I am here.
After we go to reception, I will have to wait in a waiting room with my parent or carer. The waiting room might look like this.
The waiting room might be busy and loud. This is because lots of young people go to Ryegate for appointments.
I can use headphones or ear defenders if I want to. I can also ask my parent or carer if I can wait outside.
I might feel worried about getting my height and weight measured. That is ok. Everyone feels worried sometimes.
If I am feeling worried it might help to talk to my parent or carer or do something I find relaxing. This might be listening to music or doing some colouring.
When the support worker is ready, they will ask me to go into the weighing and measuring room. My parent or carer might come with me, or they might stay in the waiting room.
When the support worker is ready to weigh me, they will ask me to take my shoes off and empty my pockets. They will ask me to take off my coat or jacket. This will help to get an exact measurement of my weight.
Now I can stand on the scales. The scales might look like this.
If standing on the scales is difficult, the support worker might measure me using a weighing scale called a hoist. The hoist might look like this.
When it is time to measure my height, the support worker will ask me to stand next to the measuring stick. The measuring stick at Ryegate is not noisy. The measuring stick might gently touch the top of my head. This is ok.
The measuring stick might look like this.
When my height and weight have been measured, I can put my shoes and coat back on, and I can put my things back in my pockets.
The support worker will let me know where to go next.
Information about my height and weight will be kept in my hospital notes.
