Using hearing aids

How can I help my child with their hearing aids?

Make sure you attend all appointments in hearing services and bring the hearing aids to all appointments.

If you are unable to attend, then you must call beforehand and rearrange.

Top tips
  • Build up the use of the hearing aids so your child is wearing them all day, every day.
  • Report faulty hearing aids to us as soon as possible to arrange replacements. Remember that we can post batteries out to you so give us a ring when your supplies are running low.
  • Report any change in their hearing with or without the aids to us as soon as possible. We can arrange to check your child’s hearing levels.

How often will we need to come to the hospital now my child’s hearing aids have been fitted ?

The first review appointment will be several weeks after the first fitting. Your child will then need regular hearing aid reviews until they reach 16 years old. Babies and preschool children may need to be seen every 2 to 3 months. Older children must be seen at least every 12 months.

At every appointment we will:

  • test your child’s hearing
  • check how the hearing aids are programmed
  • re-programme the hearing aids if needed
  • check how your child responds wearing the hearing aids

Your child may also need to attend one of our medical audiology appointments. Hearing will not be tested during these consultations but any faults or issues with hearing aids can be addressed at this appointment.

If your child has not been seen in the last 12 months (or 6 months if they are not yet at school) please phone to arrange a hearing aid appointment.

When should I contact the department for help?

You should contact us if:

  • the hearing aid stops working and a replacement battery does not help
  • you lose the hearing aid
  • your child complains that the hearing aid sounds different
  • you notice your child’s responses to sound changes even when wearing the hearing aids
  • the hearing aid is whistling when in the ear
  • you need new batteries
  • you have any other problems or questions

Hearing aid and battery safety

Batteries can be harmful if swallowed. They must be kept out of reach of young children or any child or adult at risk of swallowing things.

Keep hearing aids safe in the box provided when not in use.

Hearing aids for pre-school children are fitted with battery drawer locks. They can also be requested for older children. Please ask us if you feel your child needs this, or if you have other young children in the family.

Please dispose of used batteries safely, either at a battery recycling point or bring them back to the department.
