How to give eye drops

How do I give my child the eye drops?

There are 2 methods you can use:

Closed eye method

Wash your hands thoroughly

1. Twist off the cap
2. Tilt your child’s head back or lay them flat on their back, with their eyes closed
3. Avoid touching the dropper against your child’s eyelids or eyelashes
4. Gently squeeze until a drop of liquid falls onto the corner of the closed eye nearest the nose
5. Do not ask the child to open their eyes
6. Ask your child to keep their eyes closed until the eyelashes are wet, then dab off the excess liquid with a tissue, but do not completely dry the lashes
7. Your child can then open their eyes and blink 3 times you may then dry their lashes completely
8. Repeat with the other eye
9. Always wash your hands and your child’s hands after using the drops to avoid it being accidentally taken internally

Open eye method

1. Wash your hands thoroughly, peel the over-wrap apart and take out the drops
2. Twist off the cap
3. Tilt your child’s head back or lay them flat on their back. You may need someone else to help them keep still and in a safe and comfortable position.
4. Gently pull down the lower eyelid of one of the eyes with your finger, ask your child to look upwards

5. Avoid touching the dropper against your child’s eye, eyelashes or any other surface
6. Gently squeeze until a drop of liquid falls into the gap between the eyeball and lower eyelid

7. You can also gently press on the inner corner of the eye for 30 seconds, this will help to stop the eye drop solution draining away into the nose and throat.

8. Repeat with the other eye
9. Always wash your hands and your child’s hands after using the eye drops to avoid it being accidentally taken internally
