Cleaning contact lenses

How do I clean and disinfect contact lenses?

You lenses will need to be cleaned and disinfected overnight after you have worn them. You will be given enough cleaning solutions by Sheffield Children’s but if you  run out you can buy more supplies from a local opticians or chemist.

For both soft lenses and hard lenses:

  1. Wash your hands thoroughly and dry them with a clean towel. Please refer to this resource for how to properly wash your hands before handling contact lenses.
  2. When using a new lens case, rinse the case with cleaning solution before use to remove any debris.
  3. Always do the same lens (either right or left) first to avoid confusion.
  4. Remove the lens and gently rub some of the cleaning solution on to the lens in the palm of your hand, rinsing each side of the contact lens with solution thoroughly.
  5. Place the lens in the correct compartment of the lens holder (marked “R” for right and “L” for left on the side).
  6. Repeat with the other eye.
  7. Fill the lens case with enough solution to cover the lenses.
  8. Allow the lenses to soak in this solution overnight or for at least 6 hours.
  9. Before you wear them, rinse the lenses again with cleaning solution to remove any debris.
  10. Once you have put your lenses in your eyes, empty the lens case. Rinse it out with solution and then use a paper towel to dry the case fully. It is very important to keep the lens case clean and free from contamination.

Never use tap water to clean the contact lenses or the case.

Lenses that are not being worn can be stored for up to 4 weeks in this cleaning and disinfecting solution before re-disinfecting.

Replace your lens case every month.

Please check the manufacturer’s information about precautions, warnings and storage instructions.
