What is an outcomes measure?

In CAMHS we will ask you or your parent or carer to complete some questionnaires. These questionnaires are often what we call ‘outcome measures.’

What is an outcome measure questionnaire?

Outcome measure questionnaires usually ask questions about your wellbeing and challenges you may be facing. They can give us a snapshot of how you are doing and tell us more about any problems. This can be useful to look back on and compare to see if anything has changed.

Some of them are focused on specific problems, and some of them are more general. Some may focus on your experience with CAMHS.

Outcome measures help you and your CAMHS worker understand your symptoms and situation. They can also help you communicate your experiences with your CAMHS worker.

You might be given a paper questionnaire during an appointment or receive a text message with a link to the questionnaire.

What are they for?

Outcome measures are tools that help us understand how you are doing at different points in time. They provide information about your wellbeing, allowing us to compare and see any changes. It is a way to keep track of your mental health and make sure you are getting the support you need.

They can also give you the chance to provide feedback about your care, so you can tell us how to improve.

What happens to my data?

After you or your parent or carer has completed an outcome measure questionnaire, these will be added to your electronic patient record. Anyone working with you in CAMHS, and sometimes other health professionals involved in your care (such as your GP) will be able to see your questionnaire.

Your CAMHS worker might talk to you about your answers and what they mean, and they might be used to track your progress.

Can my data be anonymous?

Sometimes, your answers might be used anonymously in what we call audits or service evaluations. Nobody will know that the questionnaire was completed by you as your name will not be linked to it.

Audits and service evaluations tell us whether things are working well, or if there are things we need to change. Please speak to your CAMHS worker if you do not want your data to be used in this way.

If you have any questions about outcome measures, please speak to your CAMHS worker or visit CORC for young people for more information.
