Urgent surgery

Emergency, urgent, and trauma theatre list

The EUT theatre list is for patients who need an operation very quickly. Your child has been added to this theatre list to have a procedure or operation under general anaesthetic. This means that they will be given medicine so that they are not awake for their procedure.

You will need to come the Theatre Admissions Unit (TAU) at 7.45am. To get there, take the green lifts or stairs to floor D.

Information:

Please check the Theatre Admissions Unit page for up to date information about coming to the hospital and staying safe

Starvation times

Over 12 months old

It is important that your child is starved before they have their anaesthetic.

Do not let your child eat anything after 3am. This includes:

  • food
  • milky drinks
  • fizzy drinks
  • fresh fruit juice

Do not allow your child to chew gum or eat sweets

Your child can drink clear fluids, such as water or dilute squash, until you arrive at the Theatre Admissions Unit. They will then give you more instructions.

Please bring your child’s favourite water bottle or sippy cup with you.

Under 12 months old

If your child is below a year old, they can have either a formula feed at 5am, or a breastfeed at 6am.

It is important that they do not have any more milk after these times.

We will let you know while you are here whether your child can have another drink or not. This will depend on the waiting time.

How long will we have to wait?

Patients are booked onto the EUT theatre list and seen in order of clinical urgency. If there are children who need their surgery a lot faster than other children, then your child may have to wait until these are done. This means that you may need to wait anywhere from 2 hours, up to the whole day. You will be kept updated while you are waiting.

If there are a lot of procedures on the list, there is a chance that your child may have their procedure delayed until the next day. We will try to let you know as soon as we can if this is the case.

What do I need to bring?

Please bring with you a list of any medicines that your child is on, and any information that the Emergency Department gave to you.

Check the Theatre Admissions Unit page for more information about the department, general anaesthetic, what to expect when you get here, and more.

Please call TAU on 0114 271 7343 if you have any more questions.
