The ear, nose and throat (ENT) service have asked us to see your child for a trial of hearing aids, this doesn’t mean your child will automatically get a hearing aid.
Hearing aids are set to a prescription like glasses, so before we give your child hearing aids we need to make sure we have enough information to do this.
If the hearing test is clear, and we do not think we need any further testing, we will arrange an appointment for your child.
Your child may need an ear mould, if this is the case we may schedule an appointment for your child to come in to have the shape of their ears taken.
If the hearing test results are incomplete or unclear, we sometimes need to do more detailed testing before deciding on hearing aids. We will book your child in to come to the department for this.
If we need more information from you before deciding whether hearing aids are the best option for your child, we may arrange a telephone appointment to discuss further management options.
If you do not live in Sheffield, we will generally refer your child back to your local service for hearing aids. They will provide the same hearing aid options more locally to you and also have other support such as Teachers of the Deaf in your local area.
If you do not want your child to have their hearing aid care locally, or we feel that it is more appropriate to have them fitted by Sheffield Children’s Hospital, this is an option as well.
If your child’s hearing changes to normal levels, we would either not fit or take out the hearing aids.
Hearing aids can damage hearing if used with normal hearing.

We’ve got a special MRI scanner just for teddies so children can see what it’s like before they have a scan.
