Talking Toddlers: Saying and signing ‘more’

Saying or signing ‘more’ allows your child to use their words to ask for things they want. You can say or sign ‘more’ in lots of different situations. For example, with food, toys or peekaboo.

Top Tips

Blow bubbles with your child.

Pause before you blow again to see if your child will ask for more.

Say and sign ‘more’ to show your child what to do.

Ways your child might ask for more

Looking

Two faces one is speaking whilst the other listens

Making a sound

hands moving around to indicate sign language

Signing

Your child is likely to gesture before they use a word to say ‘more’.

  • At snack time try giving your child a small amount of snack, for example, a piece of banana.
  • Pause before you give them more, say and sign ‘more’ to show your child what to do.
  • Don’t worry if your child doesn’t respond, keep going with the activity and have fun!
  • Stop when your child gets bored and try again another day.
