Sleep routine for teenagers

Planned sleep time:

Preparing for bedtime

Start the routine downstairs. Turn off all technology, dim the main room lights and turn on side lamps, and close the curtains.

Settling down activity

Encourage your child to do a hand-eye co-ordination activity, such as a puzzle, model building, sketching or drawing, or a card game.

Snack time

Give your child a drink of water or milk, and a snack from the sleepy foods list.

Getting ready for bed

Make sure your child has had a bath or shower, and are into their pyjamas. Make sure they brush their teeth and go to the toilet, and do not let them go back to the living room.

Bedtime

Make sure your child is in bed, and with a book and with the lights dimmed.

Turn the lights off, and let them settle down to try and sleep.
