Referral to the pain management team

Your child will have been referred to the pain management team.

You should have received a letter with an invite to an assessment.

Where will the assessment be?

The assessment may happen online, or may be an in-person appointment at the Sheffield Children’s Hospital.

Online appointment

If your child’s appointment is online, you will have been sent details on how to open the video. If you are having issues, please contact the pain team for support.

When it is time for the appointment to start, you will be added to the meeting online. You can keep your camera off if you like.

During your call, you may meet:

  • a doctor
  • a psychologist
  • a nurse
  • a physiotherapy or an occupational therapist

In-person appointment

If your appointment is at the hospital, please check your child in at reception or at the check-in screens near the lifts.

When your name is called, you will be taken to the clinic room. The clinic room may look like this.

During your meeting, you may meet:

  • a doctor
  • a psychologist
  • a nurse
  • a physiotherapy or an occupational therapist

Some people may be on a screen to help minimise the spread of Covid-19.

What will we be asked in the appointment?

You will be asked questions about your child’s:

  • pain
  • school life and home life
  • mood
  • activity
  • sleep

After the assessment, you may need to answer some questions without your child to help work out a care plan.

We can then talk about the plan with your child and make sure they are happy with it.

What happens after the appointment?

After the assessment, we will send you a letter summarising the appointment, and with more information you may need.

What if we cannot make the appointment?

If you cannot make the appointment, please contact the pain team on 0114 271 7227.
