Pre-school children with normal hearing

Your child has had a normal hearing test today, and it is not necessary at this time to arrange a further appointment.

Will my child’s hearing remain normal?

Although today’s test is normal, it is possible for a child of any age to develop hearing problems.

What should I look out for?

Signs to look out for include:

  • frequent ear infections
  • failure to develop clear speech
  • behaviour problems
  • problems with locating sounds

What should I do if I notice any of the above?

If you have concerns about any of these, or you have any other worries about hearing, you can discuss them with your health visitor or GP. Your child can be referred for another hearing test. You can also contact us on 0114 271 7450 and we would be happy to help you.

When will my child’s hearing be tested again?

The next routine hearing test for your child will be performed during the first year in school by a specially trained hearing screener.

What can I do to protect my child’s hearing?

Do not expose your child to cigarette smoke.

Avoid long periods of exposure to high levels of noise, such as those found at concerts, or in the use of personal stereos at high volume.

Who will get a copy of this test?

A letter summarising today’s test results will be sent to your family doctor, health visitor, and to any other health professional involved with your child. If you have not received a copy of the hearing test and would like one, please request one.

What should I do if I have any further questions?

If you have any questions about today’s test results or about this resource, please contact us and speak to an audiologist.
