Phonology Clinic

What is the Phonology Clinic?

The Phonology clinic is for children over 4 years 3 months who are having difficulties with speech sounds.

Children on this pathway are seen in clinic, so you might need to take your child out of school for these appointments. Schools are fine with this but might want to see the appointment letter.

When will my child be seen?

Unfortunately the waiting time for face to face appointments can be long.

While your child is waiting to be seen you can contact our department for telephone advice on how to help your child at home. When your child reaches the top of the waiting list, we will send a letter asking you get in touch.

Clinics are in various locations across the city. We will ask for your preferences but the more flexible you are with time or location, the more easy it will be to find an appointment.

What will happen at my child’s appointment?

You will be offered up to 5 appointments: 1 for assessment and then 4 therapy sessions.

The Speech and Language Therapist will give you strategies to help your child. You will be shown these in clinic and then advised to keep practising them with your child between sessions. If you are unable to attend please let us know as soon as possible.

What will happen next?

The Speech and Language Therapist will discuss appropriate next steps with you:

  • If your child requires another block of therapy sessions they will be placed back on the waiting list.
  • If your child is making good progress with their speech then they may be discharged.
  • If your child has any other communication difficulties that require support,  then they may be seen in school or nursery by a Speech and Language Therapist.
