Nursery pathway

What is the Speech and Language Therapy Nursery pathway?

This pathway aims to support your child’s speech, language and communication skills by providing assessment and advice into their childcare setting. A speech and language therapist will be in touch within 12 weeks of your child being referred to this pathway, to offer an appointment.

What will happen at my child’s appointment?

The speech and language therapist will visit your child in their childcare setting. They will carry out some observations and activities with your child and speak to staff to gather more information. Assessment of your child will be appropriate for their age and speech, language and communication skills, and will often involve play.

What will happen next?

After the visit the speech and language therapist will provide a written ‘Communication Plan’ which sets out targets for nursery staff and parents or carers to work on.

Sometimes we might need to call you to discuss next steps, so if your contact details change then please make sure you let us know. Please note feedback might not be available immediately after your appointment.

We may discharge your child from the nursery pathway if:

  • Your child’s communication is within the normal range for their age
  • Your child is at a level 1 or 2 on the Sheffield Support Grid (SSG). There is lots of information on the SSG about how parents and nurseries can support children’s communication: Sheffield Support Grid
  • We are making an internal referral to another pathway, for example, a speech sound pathway

How can I help my child?

The best way to help children make progress with their speech, language and communication skills is by using strategies every day in their normal environment. We will provide support in understanding these strategies but the best people to implement them are the people children see every day – their family and carers.
