Nurse-led sleep clinic for narcolepsy general information

The sleep consultant at Sheffield Children’s hospital has asked for you and your child to be booked into the nurse-led sleep clinic.

When will my child’s clinic appointment be?

The appointments team at the Children’s hospital will arrange your clinic appointment and this will be sent out in the post. The nurse-led sleep clinic happens every Tuesday morning in the outpatient department at Northern General Hospital in the Children’s outpatient department. This will be on the same day as your appointment with the consultant.

What will happen at my first clinic appointment?

The first clinic appointment is planned to last up to 1 hour. During this appointment the specialist sleep nurse will take a very detailed story of your child’s sleep patterns. This is to talk about ways we may be able to improve sleep routines and coping with narcolepsy at school.

What will happen after my first clinic appointment?

After the first clinic appointment the specialist sleep nurse will make a follow up plan and discuss with the sleep consultant. Your child will then be seen in the nurse-led sleep clinic every time you attend to see the consultant. The specialist sleep nurse will also be available for phone calls in between the clinic visits to provide on going support.

Is there anything I should bring to my sleep clinic appointments?

Please bring the names of any medication that your child is taking. Any other information, contact details of links with school can also be useful to bring.

If you are unable to come in for the sleep clinic appointment that has been arranged for you, please ring the appointments line at Sheffield Children’s hospital on 0114 305 3139 as soon as possible so that this clinic appointment can be offered to someone else as availability for the specialist clinic is very limited.
