Multi-family therapy is a treatment approach for anorexia developed by the Maudsley Hospital.
Multi-family therapy is an intensive course for families who are already receiving single-family therapy. Multi-family therapy aims to help families rediscover their own resources by emphasising ways in which you can take an active role in helping your child overcome their eating problems.
It brings together families with shared experiences, and can help to overcomes isolation and sense of stigmatisation. Families can share multiple perspectives through so you can learn from one another.
It is an intense learning environment in which it is safe to practice new behaviours.
There is a maximum of 4 families in each course. It starts with an introductory afternoon lasting 2 hours and 4 consecutive days the following week from 10am to 4pm each day.
You start by getting to know each other and developing a working alliance, helping to challenge the eating disorder, and strengths, resources, and family relationships. It includes a mixture of group activities, games, and role-play.
You will bring home food for your child (which may be guided by a meal plan) and involves 2 snacks and lunch.
Afterwards, there are 4 monthly follow up days.
This can be discussed with your family therapist. This course is a big commitment, however families who have previously experienced the group have found it very useful in challenging anorexia.
