Minimal fat weaning

The majority of weaning foods are low fat and can be used without restriction such as:

  • All fruit and vegetables (avoid frying or adding oil or butter) apart from avocado and chipped potatoes
  • Baby rice made with special feed or water
  • Commercial baby foods allowed in normal amounts:
    • Wet baby foods with 0.5g fat per 100g or less
    • Dried baby foods with 2g fat per 100g or less

Once your baby is put on pureed solid foods, you can start to bring in textures and different tastes such as:

  • Plain breakfast cereals
  • Potatoes, rice and pasta
  • Lentils and pulses
  • Thicker purees of chicken or turkey (white meat with fat and skin removed) or white fish

It is advised to check the nutritional label of manufactured food and use the following guide:

  • Foods that have a fat content of less than 0.5g per 100g can normally be allowed in the diet freely unless in large amounts.
  • Foods that contain 3g fat or less per 100g are considered to contain only a little fat but need to be restricted.

For older children, see the minimal fat diet information.
