Medical audiology

Your child has been referred into medical audiology clinic. This is a consultation-only appointment and your child will not have a hearing test.

What will happen at this appointment?

The audiologist will talk about your child’s hearing levels and future audiological management. This might be monitoring your child’s hearing or reviewing in our hearing aid clinics.

The doctor will talk about aetiological investigations and perform a developmental review. They will also refer your child onto other services if needed.

What are aetiological investigations ?

These are tests that can investigate why your child has a hearing loss.

Some tests we may do are a magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) to look at the structure of the ear, a urine test (we might ask your child to provide a urine sample to be tested within the department) and we may refer to have your child’s vision checked.

The doctor may need other tests. These will be discussed at the consultation.

When will my child be reviewed?

Your child will need regular hearing reviews with an audiologist separate to any medical appointments.

Once your child has had all their investigations completed in the medical audiology clinics the doctor may not need to review them unless needed.

The doctor can also refer for genetic testing to see if there is a genetic cause for your child’s hearing loss. This can also be requested by your child directly when they attend one of our transition clinics when 14 years of age or older.
