Meal and snack time red flags

If you see any of the following red flags or warning signs during snack or mealtimes, please report this to the child’s or young person’s class teacher straight away.

It may mean that the child or young person is having difficulty eating or drinking and a mealtime checklist needs to be completed. They may also need a referral to a speech and language therapist.

Eating

Widgit of cough

Coughing when eating

Widgit of tearful face

Eye tearing when eating

Widgit of choking

Choking when eating

Widgit of wet voice

Wet breathing or wet voice after eating

Widgit of disgusted face

Gagging when eating

Widgit of throat clearing

Throat clearing when eating

Widgit of swallowing food

Multiple swallows for one piece of food or spoonful

Widgit of chewing food

Food left in the child or young person’s mouth after swallowing

Widgit of clock

Long mealtimes and not eating much

Widgit of tired face

Falling asleep at mealtimes

Drinking

Widgit of cough

Coughing when drinking

Widgit of tearful face

Eye tearing when drinking

Widgit of gasping face

Gulping or gasping when drinking

Widgit of wet voice

Wet breathing or voice after eating or drinking

Widgit of weight loss

Weight loss

Widgit of chest infection

Recurrent chest infections

Widgit of stop hand in front of red triangle

Reluctance to eat and drink

(That is not associated with a temporary illness)

Widgit of distressed face

Distress when eating or drinking

Widgit of empty glass of water

Not drinking very much

Widgit of seizure

Frequent seizures
