How to use your child’s speech sound programme at home

Your Speech and Language Therapist will provide you with the right speech sound pack for your child. You can work through the activities at home to help your child practise their speech sounds.

Each pack will focus on saying one sound at a time in a specific position of the word such as beginning, middle or end.

The first page of each pack gives information about how to say the sound on its own and how to say the sound with a vowel sound. After that there will be pages to help your child practise saying their sound in individual words, simple phrases and sentences.

Work through the activities together. It is recommended you:

  • Tell your child what sound you are focusing on. This will be the sound written on the front of your pack.
  • Tell your child you are going to help them practise listening to the sound as well as saying the sound.
  • Try to model the pure sound and not the letter name, for example:
    • say ‘sssss’ instead of ‘suh’ or ‘ess’
    • say ‘k’ instead of ‘kuh’ or ‘kay’
    • say ‘ffff’ instead of ‘fuh’ or ‘eff’
    • say ‘mmm’ instead of ‘muh’ or ‘em’

Work through the pages in order. You will need to say and read out the information on each page and help your child understand what they need to do. Say and repeat the target sound as much as possible. This way your child has lots of opportunities to hear the sound they are working on. Give your child lots of praise when they use their sound correctly such as, “Well done. You just said a lovely ‘f’ sound” or “Fantastic, I heard a lovely ‘c’ sound at the beginning of ‘car’”.

If your child does not say the target sound during practise, you could try:

  • Saying the sound, word or sentence for your child to listen to. In this scenario your child does not need to say the sound or word again. They will still benefit from listening to an adult say the target sound.
  • Saying the sound or word and asking your child to copy you, for example, “I’ll do it first and you try to copy me”
  • Giving your child gentle feedback that you didn’t hear the sound, for example, “you got the right word there, but I didn’t hear your ‘s’ sound”
  • Asking your child to try the sound or word again but this time reminding them when to say the sound “try that one again with the ‘s’ sound at the beginning of the word”

Keep practising each stage until your child can use their target sound with ease and confidence most of the time. If your child is finding a stage particularly difficult, then try going back to an earlier page and repeat the activities they can do well.

Practise little and often. Shorter sessions of 5 to 10 minutes a few times a week are more effective than less frequent longer sessions.
