Helena nursing team

The Helena specialist nursing team is a community-based team that provides 24 hour healthcare to children and young people with neurodisabilities and complex health needs.

We provide care in your home, in school, and at Ryegate House.

We also work closely with the  Palliative Care Team

Education and training

We offer training for parents and carers, as well as teachers and schools on:

  • respiratory care, including oral and nasal suctioning, and nebulisation
  • tracheostomy care

Our training is tailored to meet your child or young person’s specific needs based on individualised care plans supported by their clinician.

This specialist training is often delivered as part of a child or young person’s continuing care package. If your child or young person does not already receive a continuing care pack, there may be a cost for this service. Please get in touch with us if you are not sure if this applies to you, and the prices via email before we accept your referral.

Request for training forms can be sent via email to: helenanursing.team1@nhs.net

How can my child be referred?

Any health and social care professional can refer a child to our team. Your child should have a neurodisability or neurology consultant.

To refer children and families for continuing care in the home, a continuing care referral checklist needs to be completed and sent to  syicb-sheffield.sheffieldchc@nhs.net

If this is accepted, then a continuing care nurse assessor will complete a health needs assessment for your child or young person and your family. This does not guarantee input from the Helena specialist nursing team as other continuing care providers may be considered depending on package of care requirements. For referral forms please email syicb-sheffield.sheffieldchc@nhs.net  or helenanursing.team1@nhs.net

The Helena specialist nursing team also accepts referrals directly into the service to provide clinical assessment and support to a child or young person and family on a short-term basis, for example after discharge from hospital. Referrals for this should be completed on the Helena specialist nursing team referral form and sent to helenanursing.team1@nhs.net.
