FPIES – after a successful food challenge

This resource is for children with food protein induced enterocolitis syndrome (FPIES) who have had a successful food challenge.

Information:

Do not give them any more of the challenge food for the rest of the day.

If your child continues to be well, you can now begin to introduce the food they were challenged to gradually into their diet and encourage them to eat the food regularly.

What if my child has delayed symptoms?

The vast majority of children with FPIES will continue to tolerate the food in their diet after a challenge.

A very few children will react to the food the next time they are offered it. If there are any signs of a delayed reaction (being sick lots and diarrhoea) the please return to you nearest children’s Emergency Department for assessment.

You can also contact the allergy nurses on 0114 226 7872 or bleep 092 via hospital switchboard 0114 271 7000. If you need to call on evenings and weekends, please leave a voicemail and a nurse will contact you soon.

How do we get a discharge letter?

If your child is at school or nursery we will given you an extra copy of the discharge letter to hand in to inform them that your child no longer needs to avoid the food the have been challenged to.

A copy of the discharge letter with either be sent electronically to your GP or we will give you a paper copy.
