Doidy cups and flexi cups

Why do we use a Doidy or flexi cup?

When children drink from a cup they have to learn lots of new things such as:

  • how to move liquid from the front to the back of their mouth
  • how much to tip the cup
  • how much liquid is enough but not too much

Doidy cups can help children do this, so that they are then ready to use a sippy or an open cup.

How do I use a Doidy or flexi cup?

Put a small amount of of liquid in the cup. Sometimes your speech and language therapist might suggest you use a liquid that is thicker, such as a yoghurt drink.

Make sure you are at the same level as your child, and hold the cup for them.

Rest the cup on your child’s lips. Hold it flat and do not tip the cup.

The cup is cut away so you can see the liquid.

Let your child sip the liquid and do not pour the liquid. This means that your child does not have learn how to tip the cup and they will not get too much liquid in their mouth. They just need to learn how to move the liquid back, ready to swallow.

If you are unsure how to use the Doidy or Flexi cup, or your child is coughing when using the Doidy or Flexi cup please contact your speech and language therapist.
