Diagnosed with skeletal dysplasia

Why has my child been referred to the metabolic bone disease team?

When a child is diagnosed with a skeletal dysplasia, they will be referred to a team of specialists within a hospital who will help you to understand more about your child’s condition.

Our team includes:

  • a consultant specialising in children’s bone diseases
  • orthopaedic surgeons
  • geneticists
  • clinical nurse specialists
  • occupational therapists
  • physiotherapists

We also work with other multidisciplinary team members in the hospital such as dieticians, social workers and psychologists.

Our aim is to support children and their families with their diagnosis and what this will mean for them as they mature.

How can you help our family?

Our specialist outpatient clinics will give you the opportunity to ask any questions you may have about your child’s condition. These may be about your child’s development, mobility, school or any other issues that you may wish to raise.

Our clinics are often multidisciplinary. This means that you will be able to meet many different specialists who can offer any necessary advice and support within the clinic. We often have:

  • medical consultant
  • specialist occupational therapist
  • specialist physiotherapist

Due to some of the problems that children with skeletal dysplasias can have, they may need to be seen by other specialists outside the multidisciplinary clinic. Such referrals can be made if needed.
