What is core vocabulary?

Strategies

Make sure the core vocabulary board is available at all times to the child or young person. This helps them have easier access to communicate.

Do
  • Model, model, model
  • Point to the symbols as you are talking
  • Allow time for them to explore the board
Don't
  • Take the child’s hand to help them to point
  • Tell them to point
  • Tell them to say it again using the board if they have said a word, signed or gestured. Just model what they said back to them using the board.
