Advice for nut avoidance

Essential information for children with nut allergies

Your child must avoid all nuts completely.

Always check the labels on foods, or ask if a product contains nut or unrefined nut oils. Nuts can be hidden in foods, food labels may not always be specific for example; ‘Arachis nut’ and ‘ground nut’ means peanut.

If in any doubt about a food do not eat it.

If a nut is accidentally ingested, encourage your child to spit it out, do not allow them to swallow.

If your child has a reaction, check your treatment plan, which will have been given to you. You should always carry your treatment plan and pack in case of an emergency.

Foods containing nuts

Be aware of the following foods:

  • Indian, Chinese, Malaysian or Indonesian foods may use nuts or nut oils. Always ask first.
  • Chocolates and toffees, including Roses, Celebrations, Heroes, and Quality Streets may contain nut or nut flavourings. Remember that ‘praline’ is nut paste
  • Chocolate bars such as Fruit and Nut or Whole nut and so on
  • Cakes, biscuits and some desserts may contain nut traces or oils. Remember marzipan is almond paste
  • Pre-prepared pastries may contain some nut oils
  • Popcorn may be cooked in or coated with nut oils
  • Ice-cream or ice-cream cones may also contain nuts or nut traces
  • Breakfast cereals may contain hidden nuts, check all labelling
  • Salad dressings and cooking sauces may contain nut oils
  • Many vegetarian foods may be nut-based

Always check the label

Non–food sources of nuts

  • Some lipsticks or lip balms may contain nut oils. Always ask or check the labelling
  • Sharing drinks from cans or bottles and kissing a person who has just eaten peanuts may cause reactions due to traces of nut on the lips or saliva.
